France's Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier Arrives in Crete
The warship berthed Thursday morning at pier K-14 in Marathi, on the outskirts of Chania, and is slated to remain docked until April 7 before pushing out toward its operational theater.
The stopover was made at Souda Base — a strategically significant naval and military installation positioned along the northwest coast of Crete, in proximity to Chania — underscoring the facility's enduring importance as a logistical hub for major allied naval forces operating across the region.
Commissioned as the flagship of the French Navy in 2001, the Charles de Gaulle holds the distinction of being France's sole nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and one of the most powerful surface warships in European service.
The visit follows a similar port call by the American supercarrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which docked at Souda Naval Base last month for resupply operations — reflecting the base's growing role as a critical waypoint for NATO carrier groups navigating an increasingly active eastern Mediterranean.
