France Slams Right-Wing Mayors for Removing EU Flags, Calls It Betrayal
The actions come after last month’s municipal elections, in which the National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, secured victories in dozens of small and mid-sized towns, more than tripling its number of mayoral and council positions since the previous vote.
As a symbolic gesture, some newly elected RN mayors began their terms by removing EU flags from municipal buildings. In at least two cases, mayors personally removed the flags and shared video of the act on social media. One mayor stated that the only “worthy” flag is the blue-white-red French national standard.
“This is a betrayal of who we are,” Barrot wrote on X on Tuesday. “This [EU] flag is the flag of a possible hope; it is the flag of freedom, justice, and democracy,” he added.
Led by veteran politician Marine Le Pen and party president Jordan Bardella, the Euroskeptic RN is France’s largest opposition party and holds a plurality of parliamentary seats.
