Macron, Tshisekedi Discuss Escalating Violence in Eastern DR Congo

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi to Paris on Wednesday for high-level discussions focused on the deteriorating security situation in eastern DR Congo, where government troops are engaged in intensified confrontations with the M23 rebel movement.

The talks were held at the Elysee Palace, occurring shortly after reports emerged of the death of M23 military spokesperson Willy Ngoma. He was said to have been killed in a drone strike near Rubaya, a mining town located in North Kivu province.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X by the Congolese presidency, it was noted: “This exchange reaffirmed France's commitment to respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC in a troubling security context characterized by the Rwandan military occupation of certain localities in the east of the DRC.”

Macron, for his part, expressed appreciation for Tshisekedi’s visit to the French capital, indicating that their meeting extended beyond security concerns to include broader aspects of bilateral cooperation.

In a separate message posted on X, Macron stated: “France fully supports the mediation efforts for a lasting political solution in the Great Lakes region, the cessation of hostilities, a ceasefire, and respect for the authority of the State and the territorial integrity of the DRC.”

Although a ceasefire initiative proposed by Angola took effect on Feb. 18, hostilities have reportedly escalated in several areas of Masisi territory in North Kivu. Civil society organizations have indicated that renewed clashes between Congolese forces and AFC/M23 fighters on Wednesday forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes.
