French presidency denies Trump’s allegation on Macron, drug prices

(MENAFN) The French presidency on Wednesday rejected US President Donald Trump’s assertion that President Emmanuel Macron raised prescription medicine prices under threat of tariffs, emphasizing that Macron does not determine drug prices.

"It's being claimed that President Emmanuel Macron increased the price of medicines," the Elysee said in a post on US social media platform X.

The statement clarified that prescription drug prices in France are controlled by the social security system and have remained stable. "He (Macron) does not set their prices. They are regulated by the social security system and have, in fact, remained stable," the post said.

The presidency added that Trump’s claim contradicts ordinary experience in France, noting, "Anyone who has set foot in a French pharmacy knows this." The post also featured a meme of Trump with the caption “FAKE NEWS” in capital letters.

The comments came after Trump, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, claimed he pressured Macron to approve a doubling or tripling of prescription medicine prices by threatening a 25% tariff on French imports, and that Macron complied.
